Silsden turned up for their last game of the season full of hope that recent form could be turned into more points as they travelled to mid table Calverley.
Unfortunately, one of the seasons themes continued as the promise of a league appointed referee failed to materialise once again and this roving reporter once again landed that plum job.
The difficulty in trying to keep up with these young lads will be evident as iIam as short of notes as I was of breath on Sunday afternoon!!
Match Summary
The first 25 minutes were a tight affair and chances were minimal. Calverley then broke the deadlock with two goals in 5 minutes. Their pacey striker chipped Will and their second goal was a screamer that went in of the post.
With 3 minutes left in the first half, Knights captain, Jake Williams, would join the opposition in what was a morning of goal of the season contenders. Harry Flynn played a lovely through ball and Jake struck the ball on the half volley to give the keeper no chance as his 20 yard strike nestle in the top corner. The finish was much better than the 'robot' celebration Jake had promised Azza if he scored.
Half-Time 2-1.
Starting the second half just one goal down should have given Silsden heart but despite the efforts of the ever improving Fin McArdle at fullback Silsden conceded 4 second half goals including a couple of absolute stunners that gave Will no chance.
In truth Calverley deserved the win but but the 6-1 final score line flattered them and could have been much closer as Aqib, Oliver and Phil failed to convert half chances. Silsden's best chance for a consolation goal fell to Harry as he met Jake's corner with a bullet header but the home keeper made a good point blank save to deny him.
The Calverley coaches post game message summed up the match and our season when he said 'Wasn't a lot between the teams - for a change our shots went in and yours didn't'....
A fair reflection but as always the lads did Silsden proud and it is only fair to sign off by saying a big thankyou and well done to all the lads for their efforts throughout the season and the same to all families for supporting them.
Training will continue for a few more weeks should anyone need a break from their studying and details will be sent out for the end of season do and next season...but until then stay safe and good luck with coursework and exams.
